Q-Bot: Q-Leap Innovates to Automate Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Testing

At Q-Leap, we believe that the best innovations come from real-world challenges. With this vision in mind, our team designed and developed Q-Bot, an innovative solution that automates two-factor authentication (2FA) on a real smartphone.

Our ambition? To overcome one of the remaining obstacles to fully automated software testing.

An Innovation Born from Real Testing Challenges

Two-factor authentication (2FA) has become essential for securing applications and digital services.

However, for Quality Assurance (QA) teams, it presents a significant challenge.

Imagine running a fully automated test suite that systematically stops whenever authentication needs to be approved on a smartphone.

A tester must then manually approve a notification, enter a verification code, or confirm an authentication request.

Even a few seconds of human intervention can interrupt the entire automation process.

This is the challenge that inspired our Q-Leap team to create Q-Bot.

Q-Bot: Designed by Testers, for Testers

Designed and developed in Luxembourg by our team, Q-Bot is a physical device that automates two-factor authentication interactions directly on a real Android smartphone.

Unlike approaches that rely on simulators or disable two-factor authentication, Q-Bot interacts directly with the actual mobile authentication application.

The process is straightforward:

  1. An automated test reaches a step requiring 2FA authentication.

  2. Q-Bot is triggered through an HTTP request.

  3. The device automatically controls the smartphone and executes the authentication scenario.

  4. Once authentication is complete, the automated test continues.

The result? End-to-end test scenarios can run without manual intervention during the 2FA process.

Seamless Integration with Your Existing Testing Tools

When developing Q-Bot, our goal was also to create a solution that could be easily integrated into existing testing environments without disrupting established workflows.

Thanks to its REST API, Q-Bot can integrate with popular test automation tools, including Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, Appium, Robot Framework, Jenkins, and GitLab CI.

It also supports various Android authentication applications, such as LuxTrust Mobile, Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, and itsme.

Its web-based interface allows testers to configure automation scenarios without complex programming by defining the interactions to be performed directly on the smartphone.

Key Benefits for QA Teams

With Q-Bot, we aim to help organizations take their test automation strategies to the next level.

Truly End-to-End Test Automation

Automated tests no longer need to stop when mobile authentication is required. Test scenarios can cover the entire user journey, including two-factor authentication.

Better Integration into CI/CD Pipelines

Test suites can run automatically, including overnight or during deployments, without requiring a tester to manually approve every 2FA request.

Testing Under Real-World Conditions

Authentication interactions are performed directly on a physical smartphone using the actual authentication application, providing a testing experience closer to real user conditions.

Local Operation

Q-Bot operates within the company’s local network. Automation scenarios are stored locally on the device, without requiring an external cloud service.

A Compact and Easy-to-Use Solution

With its compact design and intuitive web interface, Q-Bot can be integrated into existing QA environments without adding unnecessary complexity.
